Renowned Neurosurgeon Robert G. Kerr, MD, Ph.D. Joins Huntington Hospital

  

HUNTINGTON, NY – Huntington Hospital, part of the North Shore-LIJ Health System, today announced the appointment of Robert G. Kerr, MD, Ph.D., as attending neurosurgeon and assistant professor of neurosurgery at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine.

For the past four years, Dr. Kerr served as a neurosurgeon at the Iowa Clinic and Iowa Methodist Medical Center and also served as medical director of pediatric neurosurgery at the Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.  Dr. Kerr, a Melville resident, received his medical degree from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario.  He completed his residency in neurosurgery and received his Ph.D. in experimental surgery at the University of Alberta in Canada.  He completed a fellowship in skull base surgery at the University of Cincinnati’s Mayfield Clinic.

His clinical interests include brain tumors, skull base tumors including pituitary adenomas and acoustic neuromas, trigeminal neuralgia, traumatic brain injury, hemorrhagic stroke, and advancing minimally invasive micro neurosurgical techniques.  In addition, Dr. Kerr provides general neurosurgical care including the treatment of degenerative spinal disc disease and degenerative stenosis. 

Dr. Kerr is one of the few neurosurgeons in the United States to use a new, minimally invasive technology called NICO BrainPath® to remove deep-seated brain tumors, cysts and hemorrhages.  The device is used with other minimally invasive advancements in brain navigation, brain mapping, tumor removal, optics and resection as part of the Six Pillar approach.

The author of numerous papers, abstracts and book chapters, Dr. Kerr has lectured in the United States, Canada and Europe on various topics, including brain tumor and skull base surgical research, neurosurgical trauma, pediatric head trauma, immunotherapy for brain tumors and minimally invasive treatment for trigeminal neuralgia.  Dr. Kerr will continue to be involved with innovative brain tumor research in collaboration with North Shore-LIJ’s Feinstein Institute for Medical Research.

Dr. Kerr is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, as well as a member of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and the Canadian Medical Association.
