Huntington's top stories for the week.

Full-day kindergarten and middle school sports fell by the wayside Wednesday night as the South Huntington Board of Education approved a budget of more than  $142 million. At a sometimes emotional meeting, the board voted 4-2 for a budget with a tax rate increase of 4.74 percent. The budget represents a 1.65 percent increase over last year. Because of a $6.75 million bond issue, the tax levy increase is 3.58 percent; certain costs are exempted from the tax cap.

Voters in two library districts approved tax levy increases Tuesday for 2012-13 while re-electing two incumbents to library boards.

The Huntington school district estimates a 6.43 percent increase in state aid for 2012-13, based on numbers presented earlier this week.

The vacant Waldbaum's store in Huntington Station will reopen as a Best Market in May. Jonathan Sender, spokesman for the Best Yet Market chain, said, "We're definitely going to refresh" the Turnpike Plaza store, which Waldbaum's occupied for about 40 years. "We’re all about fresh, from delis to fresh cuts of  meat, and bakeries. We’re a full-service market, with dairy and frozen items, and bring great values."

The Huntington school board voted 6-1 Monday to approve a revised seasonal facility use schedule which includes fee hikes as a means to raise extra revenue.

Huntington Station resident Alicia Lawrence has been named the Suffolk County District 17 Woman of Distinction for 2012.  Established in 2002, the award gives county legislators a chance to honor a constituent who has demonstrated leadership, involvement and commitment to community outside of her job responsibilities, according to a press release.

A temporary restraining order enacted Tuesday by the Town of Huntington to shut down a mulching and wood chipping operation in West Huntington is unnecessary, according to a manager at the company.
