Last Chance: Local Legend Retires

Last day on the job for Huntington hero Richard Roberston, 87.

We've seen hundreds of events come and go in the community, but how often does one pass you by that you wish you hadn't missed out on? That's where we come in. Each week Huntington Patch will post a quick reminder about events or activities whose deadlines have come.

With his last day scheduled for Monday, Huntington legend Richard Robertson, 87, will be moving on after more than 20 years with Touro Law Center. He currently works at the Central Islip location where serves as building attendant — but that's just part of the story.

One of Huntington's most outstanding residents, Robertson played baseball in the Negro Leagues and tried-out with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Along the way, he met Jackie Robinson and even batted against Satchel Paige.

Roberston joined the Huntington Town Police Department in 1949 as their first African-American officer. He moved to the Suffolk Police Department when it formed in 1960. In 1970, he retired as a sergeant after 21 years on the job.

His future plans include traveling and keeping busy with his family, according to his colleagues at the law school.

A small party is planned April 16 at the law school in his honor. For more information, contact Patti Desrochers at (631) 761-7062.

Congratulations, Richard!
