Long Island's Haunted Restaurants and Bars

Check out these local haunted establishments.

It's common knowledge to many Long Islander's that Katie's Bar in Smithtown is haunted. It's been investigated on TV's "Paranormal State," and there has been a lot of hype surrounding the place over the past few years. It's not the only popular eatery that has a ghost or two, however.

Paranormal investigator Joe Giaquinto and I have had the opportunity of investigating several haunted Long Island establishments. Good food and a
ghost! Who could ask for more?

As I've mentioned in past blogs, one of the most "active" restaurants for ghostly activity is the Country House Restaurant in Stony Brook, which continues to be haunted by the ghost of Annette Williamson. Annette was brutally murdered in the house back in the days of the Revolutionary War. Orbs, EVP's and light flashes continuously abound and have been witnessed by many patrons as well as staff. Several people, including the restaurant's owner Bob Williamson, have actually seen the apparition of Annette. For reasons unknown, Annette refuses to move on.

DEK's American Restaurant in Rocky Point has a an assortment of mischievous ghosts including one who will mess up previously set tables. By the bar area, shadowy figures can be seen swiftly moving around. There was a bartender who worked there for years who never believed in ghosts until he had his own encounter with the shadow person. From that point on he refused to be in the building alone. The building itself has a long and interesting history and is Rocky Point's oldest commercial building. It served as an inn for many years, and there are also rumors that it once was a brothel. Who knows what kind of energy could be left behind there?

On a smaller scale, the 1930's Sayville Modern Diner, located on Main Street in Sayville, realized they had a ghost or two when the chef reported that things were falling off the shelves in the kitchen. On one occasion when he opened up the diner one morning, the chef discovered a multitude of items lying about on the kitchen floor. He had been the last one to leave the night before. Joe Giaquinto has also received numerous EVP's (electronic voice phenomena) there over the years.

Heading to the North Fork, the Jamesport Manor Inn in Jamesport also has a ghost. The present building was rebuilt exactly as it was after a mysterious fire had burned it to the ground in October of 2005. The history of the place, which dates back to the 1750's, includes tragedies, death and scandals. Countless people have claimed to see the ghost of a young woman in a second floor window. It possibly could be the daughter of one of the original owners who died there tragically.

Moving on to bars, Del's Union Square Bar in Holbrook has had a plethora of ghostly activity. Apparitions, glasses flying off the bar, a TV set that turns off by itself, a glass exploding on its own, doors opening and closing...the list is endless. The building was built in the mid-1900's. It is unknown who could be haunting this establishment.

Lastly, in Nassau County, the beautiful Glen Cove Mansion in Glen Cove is said to be haunted by the ghost of its previous owner, Mrs. Pratt who died in the house she loved in 1965. The Georgian Revival building was built in 1910 and is presently a hotel and conference center. Although there has been ghostly activity throughout the building, the most haunted area seems to be upstairs in the bar. Countless employees have seen the apparition of Mrs. Pratt, and many have claimed to have felt her presence. During our investigations there, Joe and I photographed many orbs, and we received EVP's as well. Did Mrs. Pratt love her home enough to stay there permanently in spirit?

I'm sure there must be more haunted restaurants and bars on Long Island that I haven't heard of or investigated. So if you have a story a two you'd like to share, please let me know. All the above stories with the complete histories can be read in my Ghosts of Long Island books.

Did it change hands? I wasn't aware. I haven't been there since we did our investigation in 2008. I'll have to look into it. Thanks!

Hard to believe you didn't know about it already. Enjoy. Hope it is useful for you and your quest.

WOW! Growing up in Centereach I still can remember the Jack-in-the-box haunt, was this on Middle Country Road going toward Selden and Coram? I am seeing more and more information on the Paranormal for the past month and have been thinking about my childhood and how much I loved the Island. I'm having nightmares every night, the same dog gone theme that I'm around water but in different places, not sure why but, I'm either running from someone and just a couple of times I'm trying to look for someone. I really want to move back, really there is no place like it. I left on my 21st b'day for basic training in 1987 and never went back. I am the historian and case manager on a Paranormal team here in Cleveland, Ohio and also a crew member of Ghost Walk Productions, LLC who just won the 'Best Indie Horror Film' this past weekend (our first production). If I keep getting these premonitions, I just might move back to where I belong!

Hi Patti, Thanks for sharing your story. That's a shame about your nightmares. It sounds like you're doing some interesting things in Ohio though. What's your paranormal team called? Has the group been around for a while?
Pazi Steklo August 21, 2012 at 12:50 PM
Patti, lots in common. I left for basic training in 1987 (us army) too! Yes, the Jack in the Box was on Middle Country Road, back then, in front of the Model's shopping center. It's now a Pizza Hut, in front of the Denny's/Wal-Mart. As far as the Cleveland connection, my best friend lives there and I went there on my honeymoon, last year. (also, I love the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame) It's a small world, but I wouldn't want to paint it. Congrats on your achievements!

Charlie Cheswick August 21, 2012 at 12:59 PM
Yes, please post this amazing photo! Let us all judge your Photoshop skills. Regarding Katies, you've never heard of the Joking Ninjas of Smithtown? They get me everytime I go there! If you listen very closely, you can hear them snickering in the bushes...
moethegrass August 21, 2012 at 01:42 PM
Such silly stuff. Why aren't they out there cleaning up the litter along side the Long Island Expressway or making sure waters around Long Island don't get polluted. I mean they've been around long enough and what's on their schedule, frightening people, that's their priority?
John K. Massaro August 21, 2012 at 02:02 PM
Wo Charlie, could you be any more of a drag?
Chris August 21, 2012 at 02:15 PM
I just posted the picture of the Indian on the Horse. This was about 2 years ago. We took a walk at night while staying at Montauk Manor. My girlfriend was taking pictures of the Manor at night. We noticed something in the picture at the time. If you look at the posted picture, you will see me and the indian. You will have to look at it for a minute, notice his head above and to the left of mine. He is holding a bow in one hand and the other hand is about to cut off my head! I think this is one of the indians who attached the Montauk indians. The Montauk indians were peaceful from what I have read.
Charlie Cheswick August 21, 2012 at 02:31 PM
Well, I'm convinced! As usual, thoroughly conclusive evidence by a believer. Although, I kind of see something different. If you tilt your head a bit to the right, it looks like he's holding a sign of some sort and I think it reads 'build...casino...already' That's eerie!!
Walter Isaacs August 21, 2012 at 03:15 PM
I think my toaster is haunted, I just put up the picture from this morning.
Matt August 21, 2012 at 03:53 PM
@Walter. Put on some clothes. Are you going for the sexy, naked FDNY mustache look?
Charlie Cheswick August 21, 2012 at 04:03 PM
I've always heard the old Oak Beach Inn space has some creepy vibes, then NASA's Curiosity rover snapped this picture on Mars yesterday (see photo above) and I had chills go down my spine!

Kerrianne, Also, Shennanigans on Hawkins Avenue in Ronkonkoma. It was a Funeral Home in the past. Owners, as well as numerous closing bartenders have many interesting tales of strange happenings! Robert

Hi Robert, Thank you! That one is new to me. Maybe Joe and I can check it out sometime. Sounds interesting, that's for sure! Thanks for writing!

I've seen some weird stuff at 236 Union Avenue. People trying to go out the door and it won't open. Knocking with no one there
Kerriann Flanagan Brosky January 04, 2014 at 03:01 PM
Hi Jon, Is that the same place as Del's Union Square Bar, or is this another place?
