More Budgetary Woes for Suffolk County

Martin Asks -Where’s the leadership?

Today James Martin, Republican candidate for Suffolk County Legislature’s 17th district, expressed concern on the structural deficit of $50 million for Suffolk County’s 2014 budget.

“We keep paying higher taxes but yet they cannot balance the budget.  It’s another year of deficits and the taxpayers are going to be left paying more taxes for less service.  It is time that county government works for us not against us,” said Martin.  “Where is the leadership to stop the annual problem of budgetary shortfalls?”

The legislature’s Budget Review Office’s analysis of the $2.76 billion proposed budget shows a deficit of $50 million.  The budget raises police taxes on average homeowners and defers paying county debt.

“This is a bad shell game!  The county is going to take more of our paychecks while putting off paying the debt.  What are they thinking?  This is really bad fiscal management.  Like credit card debt, delaying paying the county’s debt is only going to cost us more,” said Martin.  “Why isn’t our county legislator Lou D’Amaro speaking out against this disaster in the making?”

Martin has been a vocal critic regarding the fiscal policy of the county.  He was deeply disappointed over the news that the county was only hiring 40 new police officers after the 2.6% police district tax.  “We were promised more police officers for paying this tax and we only got half the promise,” said Martin.  “This is not the way to operate.  As the next county legislator, I will use my business experience to put in place better management policies.  We will keep our promises to the people.”
