Take a Facebook vacation. No, I don’t mean post your vacation pictures and vacation adventures on Facebook while you are on vacation (that is a big no-no, and you should know better). I don’t mean spend your vacation on Facebook
either! I mean take a break from Facebook which also includes not reading your email notifications from Facebook that land in your email inbox.
I see two immediate benefits of this for the real Facebook junkies, and you know who you are. First, all your friends will miss you and wonder where you are. Your friends may even become a bit jealous, thinking what could you be up to, and what could you be so busy with that you have abandoned your Facebook addiction? During your Facebook vacation, your friends will just have to guess what you ate for breakfast!
The better benefit of course is the hours you’ve gained back into your life. How many hours per week do you spend on Facebook? Be honest. We all spend more time on Facebook than we’d like to admit. What could you be doing instead if you took a day, two days, or a week away from Facebook? Cleaning out the garage? Painting a room? Reading a book? Planting a garden? Taking a walk? Actually calling someone on the phone or visiting people in person and talking to them?
I am one of Facebook’s biggest fans, and admittedly a Facebook junkie. It is so easy to hop onto Facebook instead of tackling a mundane chore, or hop onto Facebook to take a break, isn’t it? Don’t we wish we had more hours in our day? Even if we only spend 10 minutes per day on Facebook (and we know we spend more) we’ve gained more than an hour back of our lives by taking a week off from Facebook.
If you are trying to find extra time in your life, or just feeling a bit stressed, make a plan to take a break from Facebook (or any of your other online distractions) that includes what you will accomplish with your new found extra time. You can even document your accomplishment on your Facebook Wall upon your return, complete with before and after pictures of a project!
Do you think you could unplug? Have you ever done it? Do you check Facebook or your email while on vacation?
