Town Board Recognizes Blue Devil Football

It’s the season to be honored for the Huntington High School football team, which won the Suffolk Division III championship and advanced to the Long Island finals, where the Blue Devils lost Lawrence in a thrilling game. Last week the team was recognized by the Huntington Town Board before a crowd of more than 200.

The Blue Devils came decked out in brand new blue county champion t-shirts. They brought along some of the plaques and trophies Huntington won this past fall. Members of the coaching staff were on hand, beaming and accepting congratulations from those filling the Town Hall meeting room.

“The Huntington High School Blue Devils’ football team has distinguished itself as the very best and as a team has brought credit and pride to the entire community through hard work and determination by its players and coaches,” reads the special proclamation presented to the team by the Huntington Town Board. “Our congratulations are extended to each and every player, coach and to the parents, faculty and administration of Huntington High School for their support and to all those who have helped make the Blue Devils’ football team the outstanding champions they so richly deserve to be.”

Team members filled the well between the spectator seating section and the raised dais where town board members and other officials sit. Players held some of the team’s awards, including a large wooden plaque carved in the shape of Long Island.

“High school sports encourages physical fitness, healthy competition, sportsmanship, team spirit and self-discipline among students, promoting higher levels of fitness, determination and persistence in reaching personal goals and the encouragement of lifetime pursuits regarding fitness,” states the proclamation, which was presented to the Blue Devils on behalf of the town’s residents.

As Huntington Town Supervisor Frank Petrone, Councilwoman Susan Berland and Councilmen Eugene Cook, Mark Cuthbertson and Mark Mayoka stood and gave the players and coaches a round of applause the officials were joined by the large crowd filling what used to be part of the auditorium of the old Huntington High School and Robert L. Simpson Junior High School.

“It was a wonderful honor for the players and coaches to be recognized in this way by Supervisor Petrone and the town council members,” said Steve Muller, Huntington’s head coach. “It was nice for the players to understand that what they did had a positive impact on the entire community.”
