Stuff the Bus is Underway at H-ton High School

The brutally cold and snowy winter has taken its toll on Huntington’s hungry and the local food banks that try to help them. The shelves are increasingly bare so the Huntington High School student government has mobilized to see if it can do something about it.

The teenager’s Stuff the Bus campaign is in full swing. This marks the fourth year of the initiative, which seeks to collect as many non-perishable items as possible. At the end of the drive, the items are loaded onto a school bus donated for use by Huntington Coach Corp. The “stuffed bus” is then driven to local food pantries and unloaded.

Huntington student government faculty advisors Fred Bisogno and Anthony Troffa are working with a set of dedicated student leaders to help make this year’s campaign the best yet.

“It year the amount of items collected seems to grow,” Mr. Bisogno said. “The students have really found pride in this community service project.”

Student government officials have turned to social media outlets to spread the word about this year’s Stuff the Bus campaign. The school bus will physically be stuffed on Saturday, March 29.

“We have already started to collect items in room 213 at the high school,” said Mr. Bisogno, who just so happens to teach in the room where the items are piling up. “We are looking forward to working with many other clubs at the high school, including Key Club and the Young Leaders organization.”

The student government is hosting Huntington High School’s annual Battle of the Classes competition in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium on Thursday, March 27. “One of the competitions that the grade levels will compete in is a canned food or boxed food count,” Mr. Troffa explained. “The class that brings in the most food gets the points for that particular competition.”

Organizers said that all the food collected during the Stuff the Bus drive will stay right here in the community. “We are also always willing to take donations from any of the other schools in the district or from community members,” Mr. Bisogno said. Those wishing to donate to drive can drop-off items at the reception desk inside the main entrance to Huntington High School.
