Sophomore Michael Karasik Supplies Computers to Needy

Michael Karasik is a busy guy. The Huntington High School sophomore has founded the TechConnect community service program. Its mission is to refurbish donated computers and provide them to local families in need through the Family Service League. The teenager has already supplied 40 computers.

“The project I am running is accepting donated computers, monitors and accessories through churches, temples etc. and any other means of donation,” Mr. Karasik said. “I am planning on putting flyers around the high school to find more sources of unused, unwanted computers and accessories.”

The sophomore is a hardworking young man with a mind that quickly grasps technological concepts. “Once I get the machines I refurbish them, make sure they are all clean and ready to go and install important functions into the computer such as security features and Microsoft Office,” Mr. Karasik said. “Once the machines are prepped and running smoothly I bring them to the local Family Service League center in Huntington. From there the computers and monitors are distributed to families in need.”

Along with meeting a need for technology in the Huntington community, Mr. Karasik’s program is also environmentally friendly. It recycles what would otherwise be discarded computers and gets the units into the hands of those who have a real use for them.
