Huntington School Board Notes

Huntington School District faculty members Phyllis Frank (special education/Woodhull School), Jayne Hallet (guidance counselor/Huntington High School), Claudia Mingin (classroom/Flower Hill School) and Kathleen Thompson (reading/Southdown School) are retiring at the close of business on June 30.

Retirement requests submitted by the four teachers were approved by Huntington School Board members during a public meeting on Monday, January 6 in the Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School auditorium.

Trustees also approved Vincenza Famiglietti-Caruso (Washington School/Nov. 20 through Dec. 20 and Woodhull School/Jan. 6 through approximately February 24) and Priya Mondkar (Jefferson School/Nov. 8 through June 30) to work as long-term substitute elementary classroom teachers.

Trustees also took the following actions:

·   Approved the following individuals to work as substitute employees during the 2013/14 school year: Christina Sorrentino (teacher aide), Allison Conlon (teacher), Katelyn Lamay (teacher), Timothy Hardy (custodian), Sara Bonilla (food service), Montier Nelson (food service) and Sean Doherty (security).

·   Approved J. Taylor Finley Middle School teachers Donna Morro, Michelle Aguirre, Christopher Helmke, Matthew Liguori, Christine Nugent and Matthew Perlongo to participate in the after-school STEM program. Ms. Moro will serve as the lead team. She is authorized to work up to 54 hours. The other teachers were approved to work up to 34 hours. The teachers will be paid $49.95 per hour, which will be funded through a state grant.

·   Approved additional work for teachers Christine Barresi, Joanne Cicio, Christine Lofaro and Martha Reilly. The teachers will work on aligning Go Math curriculum with New York State math modules. They will each be paid $49.95 per hour for up to 25 hours of work during the school year. The stipends are covered by a Title IIA grant.

·   Authorized student Christopher Glowacky to work as a lab assistant at Huntington High School. He will be compensated at the rate of $7.25 per hour.

·   Approved changes in appointments for J. Taylor Finley Middle School science teachers Matthew Liguori (from .4 to .7) and Matthew Bilello (from .4 to .2). The changes are effective November 18 through June 30.

·   Authorized Kerry Hicks to serve as a volunteer coach with the Huntington High School girls’ basketball team during the 2013/14 season.

·   Accepted the resignation of Woodhull School three-hour monitor Melisa Cartagena, effective December 20.

·   Approved a return from a leave of absence for Southdown School classroom teacher Tiffanie Kelly, effective January 30.

·   Granted a leave of absence to Southdown School teacher assistant Melissa Sarducci, effective January 6 through April 27.

·   Approved the retirement of Maureen Vogel, a secretarial assistant in the district’s human resources office, effective at the close of business on January 3.

·   Appointed Raffaela Montesano as the acting principal of Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School, effective January 7.

·   Ratified memorandums of agreement with the bargaining units representing the district’s clerical workers and security guards. Each agreement will run from July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2015.

·   Approved Dame Forbes and/or Edward Florea to conduct a chemical inventory at Huntington High School during the 2013/14 school year. They will be paid $49.95 per hour for an overall total of 32 hours.

·   Approved a consultant services contract with Paul Sachs of New York City for an economic reform presentation accompanied by music. He will be paid $350 for five one-period presentations.

·   Approved the addition of Driven Dance Pit National Dance Competition to the list of organizations authorized to use district facilities. The organization intends to hold a dance competition on April 12-13 in the Huntington High School auditorium. Attendance is estimated at 300-500. Sherri Price of Sandy Springs, Georgia is in charge of the event.

·   Approved Michelle Aguirre to conduct a chemical inventory at J. Taylor Finley Middle School during the 2013/14 school year. She will be paid $49.95 per hour for up to eight hours of work.

·   Authorized teachers Christine Barresi, Louis R. Giani, Melissa Goldsborough, Suzanne Knoerzer, Melissa Mazzalonga, Patrice Monks and Martha Reilly and clerical worker Theresa Campsey to receive mileage reimbursement for their district related travel between buildings.

·   Approved overnight field trip requests for the Huntington wrestling team to travel to Windsor and Albany, New York for tournament competitions.

·   Approved contracts for special education services with the Smithtown, South Huntington and West Islip school districts.

·   Approved a contract for student health services with the Great Neck, Syosset and West Islip school districts.

·   Approved a contract with Music Theatre International related to royalties and the rental of set materials for the Huntington High School drama club production of the spring musical Into the Woods.

·   Appointed Gretchen Hannon as a part-time 10-month clerk typist (15 hours per week), effective January 7 through June 30. She will work in the assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction’s office on grant-funded programs and associated reporting.

·   Approved a resolution related to purchase procurement on the basis of “best value.”
