Huntington School Board Establishes Annual Goals

Huntington School Board members adopted a set of eight annual goals for the 2013/14 school year without a dissenting vote. Trustees took the action during their meeting on Monday, September 9 in the Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School auditorium.

Trustees began discussing possible goals for the year during an evening retreat in August. Since then the goals have been refined and streamlined. During last Monday night’s meeting, Huntington School Board President Emily Rogan read each goal aloud for the audience of about 100. Trustee Bill Dwyer made a motion to adopt the goals, a procedural requirement that set the stage for a short discussion about the district’s future priorities.

·   Continue to demonstrate measurable progress in overall student, building and sub-group performance, including graduation rates at the high school.

·   Further integrate Common Core curricula in grades K-8, as well as initiate implementation in high school algebra and English language arts, while maintaining authentic learning experiences and individualization in classrooms at all levels.

·   Continue to develop a fiscally responsible and transparent budget given the economic constraints and conditions resulting from the tax levy limit, maximizing efficiencies while maintaining the integrity of programs and services offered at all HUFSD schools.

·   Further determine and evaluate strategies to promote effective use of all district facilities, including those that address potentially increasing enrollments and those resulting from the investigation of energy/cost-saving initiatives.

·   Review/evaluate potential infrastructure upgrades and educational technology solutions that enhance district communications and address state assessment requirements.

·   Maximize home-school communication and further increase parent engagement throughout the school community.

·   Maintain relations with the town government in an effort to ensure that district interests are considered and addressed as relevant town initiatives are implemented.

·   Work with our food service provider to improve the quality and nutritional benefits of the food served in our schools, with the goal of serving better tasting, health-supporting choices that appeal to all students.
