A team of five Huntington High School science research program students recently competed in the 15th annual Long Island Regional Envirothon at the Old Bethpage Village Restoration, racking up some impressive results.
Squad members Amber Lindner, Bobby Scott, Megan Hansen, James Sosa and Emily Shutman put on a sensational display of their science skills. The multi-pronged competition included exams and hands-on skills in the areas of aquatics, forestry, soils, wildlife and several current environmental issues.
Along with exams, the team had to develop and present a coordinated resource management plan for a farming community. The group spent several sleepless nights preparing their oral presentation and posters, making sure “every base was covered.”
The Huntington team captured first place in Suffolk for its oral presentation “with one judge commenting on how outstanding the group was in their skills,” said Lori Kenny, a science teacher who heads the research program. “They were proud to know that they were the first Huntington team to achieve this success and they are motivated to win the top team award in the coming year so that they can compete in the state championship.”
Mrs. Kenny said the five Huntington research students “had a unique quality in that they were supportive of one another to help enhance each other’s strengths in order to find success.”
There were many scientific discussions, as well as laughs, throughout the day among the Huntington team members. “I always enjoy this competition as it has a direct application to our impact on the environment and how we can help solve the problems to create a balance in our ecosystem,” Mrs. Kenny said.
