HFEE Funds Mac Purchase for HHS Photography

The Huntington Foundation has approved a Star grant award that will allow the Huntington High School photography program to acquire a new 27-inch Apple iMac desktop computer.

Huntington photography teacher Pamela Piffard submitted the grant application. The new computer will be used in the school’s photo lab. “Many students wish to work on projects in the Mac lab during free periods, but the room is either full being utilized or is unsupervised because I am teaching in the photo lab during that period,” Ms. Piffard wrote in her application.

The Huntington Foundation for Excellence in Education grant will allow for the creation of a new work station. It will be networked into the school’s Mac lab and will provide students with extra time to work on both assigned and non-assigned projects.

“The students who are enrolled in AP 2D have especially expressed a need for extra lab time to get their work done by the AP deadline,” Ms. Piffard said. “Without any second location, students are very limited in Mac lab time throughout the year. I would like to offer students more access to their work. The Mac server is not networked into the rest of the building so it is the one and only place students in my class can work on their projects.”

The new Mac desktop will feature a 2.9 GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor, turbo boost up to 3.66 GHz, 8 GB memory and a 1 TB hard disk drive. “We look to support student learning and encourage students and they will be inspired to work having this additional Mac station available for their use,” Mrs. Piffard said.

The Huntington Foundation’s annual Reach for the Stars fundraising gala is set for Friday, February 7, 2014 at the renowned Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. The evening will celebrate public education.

Patricia Dillon, a longtime district librarian and class advisor, who is currently the Huntington High School librarian, will be presented with the 2014 Spirit Award for her years of dedicated service to the community.

The evening will feature cocktails, music, dancing, dinner, raffles, silent and live auctions and much more. Tickets will go on sale next fall.

The Huntington Foundation is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of the district’s schools. Since parents created it in 1993, the Foundation has funded over $800,000 worth of educator-generated grants.

The Foundation is inviting individuals and companies to participate in next winter’s festive gathering by purchasing journal ads, donating goods or services to be auctioned off or by making monetary contributions. For more information about the opportunities that exist contact Laurene Napurano at (631) 988-0949 or laurenen@optonline.net.  Seating for the gala is limited.
