Finley Dance Attracts Hundreds

The J. Taylor Finley Middle School student council really knows how to throw a party. About 200 students attended a recent Halloween dance in the school gym and cafeteria.

Most of the students turning out for the dance wore costumes. PTA members decorated the cafeteria and pitched in to help teachers and aides serve snacks and refreshments to the hungry and thirsty crowd.  A photo station proved to be popular. “It was a great night,” PTA President Julie LaBella said.

Woodhull School teacher aide Richie Signorelli aptly served as the dance’s DJ. When he played Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” students went wild. The student council officers and advisors did a “great job” organizing the dance, according to the seventh and eighth graders who attended the function.

Finley teachers Frank Battista and Matthew Perlongo are the student council’s faculty advisors this year. Lindsay Saginaw (president), Charlotte Brosoff (vice-president), William Fallon (secretary) and Peter Ciccone (treasurer) serve as the organization’s elected leaders.

The Finley student council has been a highly energetic organization ever since the school opened in September 1965. Generations of student leaders have worked closely with administrators, teachers and classmates on educational, charitable and service projects and have organized social events for the young people attending the school.

Prizes were awarded at this year’s dance for the best costumes based upon a vote by the teachers at the event. “As usual, the Halloween dance was a success,” Finley Principal John Amato said about the recent event.
