Blue Devils Play for Suffolk Title Saturday Night

The Huntington High School football team will battle three-time defending champion Sayville for the Suffolk Division III title on Saturday night at Stony Brook University’s LaValle Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

The Blue Devils compiled a 5-3 record during the regular season and have won two playoff games for an overall mark of 7-3 heading in the county championship game. The Golden Flashes went 4-4 before capturing two playoff contests for a season record of 6-4. The Blue Devils have outscored their opponents this fall by a 250-189 margin. Sayville has scored 355 points and yielded 276 through10 games.

“It should be a great game,” said Steve Muller, Huntington’s head coach. “Sayville is very talented and has great coaching. We need to keep our focus, execute and make the plays. It’s important that everyone does their job and covers every assignment. I am confident that everyone will play hard.”

Huntington bested Bellport (17-13), Westhampton Beach (35-13), Amityville (27-12), Comsewogue (21-10) and Harborfields (14-6) and lost to Islip (23-18), Miller Place (42-28) and Sayville (44-14) during the regular season. The Blue Devils defeated Hauppauge (35-14) and Bellport (41-12) in playoff games.

Coached by Robert Hoss, Sayville defeated Westhampton Beach (38-19), Huntington (44-12), Comsewogue (41-20) and Kings Park (26-21) and lost to Miller Place (25-18), Eastport-South Manor (35-34), Bellport (49-21) and Islip (59-58). The Golden Flashes topped Islip (40-7) and Miller Place (35-27) in the playoffs.

Huntington’s offense will be led Saturday night by quarterback Ben Kocis (103 of 199 passing for 1,491 yards and 10 touchdowns and 58 carries for 450 yards and six touchdowns rushing), running backs Levar Butts (100 rushes for 754 yards and nine touchdowns) and Troy Greene (122 rushes for 958 yards and nine touchdowns) and top receivers Christian Jamison (47 receptions for 760 yards), Davonte Evans (12 receptions for 108 yards) and Infinite Tucker (18 receptions for 342 yards and two touchdowns).

The Blue Devil defense will look to Greene, Butts, Jamison, Evans, Tucker, Ryan Iwanicki, Anthony Puca, Matteo McNeil, Y’Majesty Allen, Jimmie Nelson, Keegan Reilly and Val Gutierrez to keep Sayville’s offense in check. The Golden Flashes are led by explosive running back Matt Selts and talented young quarterback Jack Coan.

Blue Devil football parents have planned a Thanksgiving-type feast for the Huntington players this Friday night in the school cafeteria. Dinner will once again be followed by a team meeting and film session in an academic classroom as coaches review game strategy.

Tickets to Saturday night’s championship game will be available at the gate for $6.
