The Huntington High School wrestling team returned to the mats on Sunday for the Blue Devils’ annual holiday tournament. The competition was delayed one day by a snowstorm.

Huntington produced six individual champions over the course of the day. Kyle Mock (106 lbs.), John Arceri (113), Jorge Villela (138), Brandon Mendez (152), Joseph Puca (160) and Anthony Puca (220) all captured weight class titles.

Also placing in the competition was Joe Sallitto (2nd-285), Carlos Viera-Pereira (3rd-145), Khari McNeil (3rd-285), Ethan Dwyer (4th-99), Oscar Romero (4th-195), Ryan Mock (6th-99), Howard Schiman (6th-145), Charlie Ehrman (6th-160) and Jonathan Canas (6th-182).

All-Long Island Football Players

Three Huntington High School football players have earned a spot on Newsday’s All-Long Island second team. The group of Blue Devils includes quarterback Ben Kocis and running backs/linebackers Levar Butts and Troy Greene.

Kocis completed 116-of-228 passes for 1,687 yards and 11 touchdowns. He threw only five interceptions. He also rushed 82 times for 535 yards and eight touchdowns.

Butts rushed 133 times for 959 yards and 14 touchdowns. He had 12 receptions for 129 yards. Defensively the teenager had 120 solo tackles, including 20 for a loss, 20 assists, five quarterback sacks, two pass deflections and a blocked punt.

Greene recorded 158 carries for 1,138 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also had six receptions for 76 yards and a touchdown and a two-point conversion.  Defensively the teenager had 105 tackles, including 25 for a loss, 14 assists, five quarterback sacks, an interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery and four pass deflections.

 

Heartbreaking Overtime Loss

The Huntington High School boys’ basketball team suffered a heartbreaking 57-55 double overtime loss last Friday night at East Islip.

The Blue Devils trailed 10-8 at the end of the first quarter, but rallied in the second frame, going on a 12-4 run to grab a 20-14 halftime lead. The Redmen outscored Huntington in the second half, 32-26 to force the game into overtime.

 With the score knotted at 46-all, the two teams scored six points apiece in the first extra frame to send the contest into a second overtime period. East Islip scored what proved to be the winning points on a pair of free throws with 15 seconds remaining.

Scott Gulizio and Kevin Montesfusco led all Huntington scorers with 10 points each. Alex Castillo and Kenny Charles pumped in nine points each. Shyheim Brewster and Jaye Bookhart had six points apiece. Kevin Lawrence and Lee Reiver combined for five points.

 

Eighth Grade Golf Sensation

J. Taylor Finley Middle School eighth grader is a golf sensation. The teenager has qualified for the Section XI golf championships in the spring after turning in a fabulous season with the Blue Devil varsity team.

“Tyler is a young talent and the future of Huntington golf,” said Michael Marinello, the Blue Devils’ head coach. Gerbavsits finished the regular season with a 12-0 mark.

“His improvement from last season is remarkable,” Marinello said. “You can see Tyler’s love for golf and the time and effort he puts in to progress his game.”
