Blue Devil Girls' Lax in Playoffs on Saturday at Harborfields

The Blue Devils will be ready. The Huntington High School girls’ lacrosse team will travel to Harborfields on Saturday for a 12 p.m. Section XI Division II playoff game. Admission is free.

Huntington (9-5 league, 10-5 overall) closed out its regular schedule with victories over Hampton Bays (18-2) and Deer Park (18-6). Harborfields (8-6 league, 9-7 overall) topped the Blue Devils in overtime during the regular season, 14-13.

Huntington is led by seniors Hannah Burnett and Alexis Thomspon. The two talented players have lit up scoreboards across the county this spring with explosive offensive displays. Burnett is headed to the University of Florida and Thompson is going to Lafayette College after both accepted NCAA Division I scholarships.

Saturday’s battle is expected to be a closely fought contest. “I think that it’s going to be a very good playoff game because we are both good teams and it’s a good match-up,” Thompson said. “As long as we have good practices all week it will definitely be a good tough game and whichever team comes out to really play and wants it more will win.”

Going into this weekend’s post-season contest, the Blue Devil players are all on the same page. “We have some preparation we need to do this week to get ready for Harborfields,” Burnett said. “It should be a really good game but our team is prepared for it. Playoffs have always been a team goal of ours, and now it’s here and we’re ready.”

In the final game of the regular season on Senior Day at Blue Devil Stadium, Huntington looked unbeatable while building a 14-1 halftime lead over Hampton Bays. The Blue Devils received scoring contributions from 16 different players in the 18-2 victory.

Thompson has three goals and an assist. Burnett scored twice and added five assists. Stephanie Rafuse and Annie Nugent had two goals each. Alyssa Amorison notched a goal and two assists. Hailey Bengston, Emily Maggio, Caitlin Knowles, Lucie Lavelle, Katia DeSimone, Heather Forster, Katie Keys and Brianna McDonald all scored one goal each. Emma DeGennaro, Katie Reilly and Irina DeSimone each assisted on two goals. Huntington’s goalies were also splendid. Anna Tesoriero made four saves and Fiona Geier stopped one shot.

Thompson turned in one of the greatest days in Blue Devil girls’ lacrosse history against Deer Park, scoring five goals and assisting on six others. Burnett was once again sensational with four goals and four assists. DeGennaro tallied three goals and two assists and Reilly had three goals and an assist. Sarah Fernandez (1g, 2a), Mackenzie Maloney (1g), Amorison (1g, 1a) and Irina DeSimone (1a) also contributed to the offensive onslaught. Tesoriero recorded eight saves and Geier again stopped one shot.

Huntington coaches Kathy Wright and Kailene Abt hope to keep the Blue Devils’ season going with a win on Saturday.
