Holiday Guide: Buying Locally

This holiday season, consider supporting our independently-owned businesses.

No matter how you celebrate the holidays, gift-giving is probably one of the items at the top of your to-do list this time of year. According to a Gallup poll, Americans forecast they will spend $712 on Christmas gifts this year, which is almost identical to the $715 they estimated they would spend in 2010.

Whether you relish choosing the perfect gift for each person on your list, or find the process somewhat stressful, consider patronizing local, independently-owned businesses this holiday season. There are many reasons for this, but it comes down to the simple fact that they keep more money in our communities than do the big corporations. A study commissioned by the nonprofit organization LocalFirst found that for every $100 spent, local businesses put $73 back into the local economy, while other businesses put back just $43. In this spirit, here are a few gift ideas available from local businesses that can help you cross those last recipients off your list while doing good for our community at the same time.
