Halesite Fire Department Holiday Food Drive

Giving So That Others May Give Thanks

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Halesite Fire Department is once again collecting donations of canned food, non-perishables, and toiletries to give to the Family Service League. Located on Park Avenue in Huntington, The Family Service League has been helping the less fortunate of Long Island for over 85 years. They accept donations year round and re-distribute those items to families in need in the Halesite and Huntington community.

It’s hard to imagine that an affluent area like ours would have families that need help. But for 1 in 6 people in the United States, hunger is a reality. Many people believe that the problems associated with hunger are confined to small pockets of society, certain areas of the country, or certain neighborhoods, but the reality is much different. Our neighbors, not strangers, are struggling with hunger. In the Huntington area there are more than 3,000 families who receive the benefits of donated food, clothes and other assistance from the Family Service League.  These are often hard-working adults, children and seniors who simply cannot make ends meet and are forced to go without food for several meals, or even days. In the United States, more than one out of five children lives in a household with food insecurity, which means they do not always know where they will find their next meal. According to the USDA, 16.7 million children under 18 in the United States live in this condition – unable to consistently access nutritious and adequate amounts of food necessary for a healthy life.

We will be collecting your donations at the firehouse from now through Thanksgiving. When you walk in the front lobby, there will a drop box for all donations. This time of year, donations of food are especially welcomed, as the recipients will be celebrating the holidays as well. Any donation you can make will be appreciated.
