This year’s Tuesday evening Lenten Program at St. John’s Episcopal Church, on the corner of Main and Prospect Streets, will feature two short works each by Flannery O’Connor and Leo Tolstoy and a longer one  by T. H. White.

The calendar for the Lenten Program will be as follows:
1. February 23—Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man Is Hard to Find”: Jesus and the World Upside Down. Discover how an escaped convict who is complicit n the death of an entire family can be an instrument of God’s grace.

2. March 2—Leo Tolstoy’s “The Death of Ivan Ilych”: Death: End or Beginning? The story of a social ladder climbing high court judge and his inability to truly grasp his own mortality as he approaches death.

3. March 9—Flannery O’Connor’s “Good Country People”: Blindness, Pride, and the Road to Redemption how a young woman with a PhD in Philosophy and a wooden leg can be put on the road to redemption when her leg is stolen by a “bible salesman”

4. March 16—Leo Tolstoy’s “Master and Man”: Sacrificial Re-birth. A transformational story of a powerful man and his servant caught in a blizzard as the master finds redemption in self-sacrifice.

5. March 23—T. H. White’s The Once and Future King The quintessential Arthurian legend work that has had an impact on the entire Western World. Jeanne Provenzano, the wife of Long Island Diocese bishop Lawrence C. Provenzano, will facilitate the discussion. Prior to moving to Garden City, Ms Provenzano was an assistant district attorney for Hampden County, Massachusetts.

The public is invited on Tuesday evenings for Evening Prayer at 6:00PM, followed by a light supper, and book discussion.

All of the titles are available from the Book Revue, New York Avenue or on line. As the Collect (taken out of context) has it—READ, MARK, LEARN, AND INWARDLY DIGEST. Join us this Lent for a literary journey and an adventure in learning
