Huntington School District Plans Blood Drive

The Huntington school district will hold its annual blood drive Tuesday at Jack Abrams Intermediate School.

Staff members and community residents are encouraged to participate.

Long Island Blood Services is staffing the drive from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., which features extended hours beyond the end of the normal school day in an effort to give dozens of additional opportunities to those willing to donate.

"Having sufficient blood supply available can only happen with continued blood drives such as the one our district is holding," Dr. Vicki Mingin, Huntington's executive director of special education and student support services, said. She is helping coordinate the drive with Woodhull nurse Liz Scannello.

Organizers said that many people don't realize one pint of blood can assist up to six other individuals in need.
"By giving blood, you are doing something that will help other people, and at the same time feel good about yourself," Mingin said.
