Film History Lecture: REDISCOVERED RARE MOVIE COMICS

Join film scholar Glenn Andreiev for a lively exploration of some vintage funny-people who are becoming mainstream cult movie stars

Members: $10 • Public: $15
Modern audiences are becoming fans of rare and sometimes unusual movie comics from the past. Spend a whirlwind evening at the Cinema as film scholar Glenn Andreievpresents a class on vintage and obscure funny people. Discover movie comedy teams such as Wheeler and Woolsey, whose naughty, pre-code antics sent religious groups into a tizzy. Soak in the surrealslap-stick antics of Olsen and Johnson, whose 1940’s films looked like an insane combination of Abbott and Costello and German expressionism. Discover the wild films of lovely pre-war Soviet singer/comedienne Lyubov Orlova, whose energetic Russian-language musical-comedies combined sight gags with early cartoon animation. (Josef Stalin was a die-hard Orlova fan, and would often act out scenes from her films for party guests!) Add on other rare comics such as Mexico’s “El Pipporro”, a singing-joking cowboy, who in one film, saves the world from intergalactic bathing beauties, and you have an unforgettable trip through movie comedy history.
