Cultural Arts Workshops for Teachers-Creating Portraits from history, culture and imagination

David Martine Director/Curator of the Shinnecock Nation

Cultural Center and award winning painter of Native Americans and

Landscapes. David will talk about his background of belonging to 2 nations

(Shinnecock/Montauk and Chiricahua/Fort Sill Apache) and his Hungarian roots in

the United States.  An overview of his work at the Shinnecock Nation

Cultural Center and the museum collection will be given (which includes David’s

portraits of known Native Americans from history). Participants will watch how

David begins a portrait project with reference and then create their own

portraits with  reference and drawing

tools.  Experiment with your own

preferred drawing tools and paper or try some new ones with us.
