VIDEO: More Heading To Red Cross Shelter As Irene Nears

Nearly 90 registered in South Huntington shelter at Whitman High School by 11 p.m.

Nearly 90 people were registered at the Red Cross shelter set up at Whitman High School in South Huntington.

The number of people checked in at 11 p.m. Saturday was significantly up from earlier in the day. Less than 10 people were registered by about 1:30 p.m.

Most at the shelter said falling trees and flooding were the main reasons to evacuate homes and seek safe haven.

Officials said they expect the facility to remain open through Sunday with Hurricane Irene forecast to impact Huntington by early morning Sunday.
