Spencer Nominated for 18th District

Suffolk Democrats choose doctor to succeed Cooper in county legislature.

Suffolk County Democrats chose Dr. William Spencer Wednesday night as their candidate to succeed the term-limited Jon Cooper for the 18th Legislative District.

The Centerport doctor was chosen over businessman Steve Rossetti after a third candidate,  Jim Kelly, withdrew.

The Democrats convened in Hauppauge Wednesday to choose candidates for several races, including Babylon Town Supervisor Steve Bellone as candidate for Suffolk County executive.

Spencer, 43, is chief of otolaryngology department. He and his wife, Rachel, have three children. He also serves as head of the Huntington Housing Authority, with his term expiring in June.

Cooper, the legislature's majority leader, said, "Doc Spencer is a good friend of mine and a true progressive. I think he will be an extremely strong candidate for the general election and no doubt he will ultimately prevail in the race. I will be proud to see him follow in my footstep and  continue to fight the same battles I’ve fought over the last 12 years.”
