Spa Adriana Co-Founders a Mainstay at Fashion Week and Huntington Resident Chosen as Townwide Fund Honoree

Welcome to "About Town," a new column that will keep you up to the minute with what's what, who's who and what the town's talking about. Check in often, because we will be updating often. And if you see something ... say something.

John and Adriana Vater, co-founders of Huntington's Spa Adriana, have been involved with New York's Fashion Week for more than 10 years. Spa Adriana is an Aveda lifestyle salon and spa, and for many of those years they joined the Aveda team backstage doing hair and makeup for the models to prep them for the runway.

More recently they've been working the front of the stage as part of the Spa Adriana company, A. Vater Inc., which specializes in fashion, beauty and photography, with Adriana – who serves as Creative Director for Spa Adriana – sitting in the front-of-the-house at the shows in her capacity as freelance beauty columnist for several New York-based news outlets. She also uses this opportunity to do reconnaissance for Spa Adriana, checking out the newest trends in fashion and beauty and bringing that information back to her clients in Huntington.

John, Spa Adriana's master colorist, is also a mainstay at the shows as a freelance fashion and beauty photojournalist. John has been photographing fashion and beauty for more than 35 years. He began his career shooting for local Long Island press, then made his way to New York City where he captured the fashion elite on film for top modeling agencies. His work has been featured in Cosmopolitan, Redbook, The New York Times, Studio and Esthetica, and has graced the cover of Newsday. His photos have also been showcased in Modern and American Salon Magazines and National Geographic Traveler.

Together, their editorial work – Adriana's insights as a beauty columnist and John's vivid photographs – are seen in publications throughout New York, including Huntington's Village Connection Magazine, which will feature their Fashion Week photos and beauty tips in the October issue.

They were on-the-scene this week at Fashion Week in the new Lincoln Center venue.

"There was wonderful excitement about the new venue in Lincoln Center," Adriana said. "Last season, the last in Bryant Park, was a milestone as we were all bidding a fond farewell to the neighborhood and the iconic tents, which became a legendary symbol of Fashion Week. This season everyone embraced the new era with a warm welcome, looking ahead to new traditions, watching an exciting new legacy unfold."

HUNTINGTON RESIDENT CHOSEN AS TOWNWIDE FUND HONOREE

Sal Ferro has been chosen as this year's honoree for the Townwide Fund of Huntington's 2nd Annual Holiday Fundraiser, which will take place at the John W. Engeman Theater at Northport on Nov. 18.

Ferro, who lives in Huntington with his wife and three children, coaches a Little League team in the area, in addition to serving on the boards and committees of many other non-profit organizations. He is currently President & CEO of Alure Home Improvement and is a bit of a Long Island celebrity after recently completing his eighth project for ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition."

"As a Huntington resident with great pride in our community, I'm flattered to be selected as this year's honoree by the Townwide Fund of Huntington," Ferro said.

Townwide Fund committee chair Greg Kennedy said, "Sal was chosen to be this year's honoree because of his outstanding humanitarian contributions to the Huntington community, and to all of Long Island." Kennedy added that as an active member of several local non-profit organizations, Ferro has helped to raise thousands of dollars in donations.

Save the date for this gala fundraiser, which will take place during the opening night performance of The Sound of Music.

Guests will walk the red carpet as they arrive for the pre-dinner cocktail hour, and will get full star treatment as they are photographed by the "paparazzi." Tommy Sullivan, one of the founding members of Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge, will provide entertainment on the theaters stunning, blue, art deco Steinway piano. Guests will enjoy food from local restaurants and specialty drinks created just for this event. Raffle prizes will be offered in a Chinese auction during the show's intermission.

The first planning meetings have already taken place, and members of the Townwide Fund will be making their way around town to solicit local businesses to supply food, beverages and raffle prizes, and to reserve space in the fundraisers "Playbill" journal. Interested parties should contact Kennedy at (631) 425-2500.
