A Reason Not to Feel Guilty About Eating Cupcakes and Vietnam War Memorial Coming to Town

Welcome to "About Town," a new column that will keep you up to the minute with what's what, who's who and what the town's talking about. Check in often, because we will be updating often. And if you see something ... say something.

Most people don't need any excuse at all to enjoy a cupcake from Reinwald's Bakery, but if you feel a little guilty giving in to the temptation, Cupcakes for a Cause will make you feel downright good about it.

Cupcakes for a Cause is a program that was started seven years ago by the national non-profit CancerCare, which has a main office located in Woodbury. Reinwald's will be one of over 600 bakeries throughout the country participating in this event. Each will donate 20 percent of all September cupcake sales to this organization which provides counseling and aid to children and families affected by cancer.

Reinwald's will be featuring a special cupcake in remembrance of Carlo Blangiardo. Carlo, a young Long Island man passed away last year from Pancreatic Cancer leaving behind his pregnant wife, Joanna, and young daughter, Alexandra. Carlo's Cookie's & Cream combines all of Carlos favorite flavors. The finishing touch is a sugar soccer ball to represent his favorite sport. For every Carlo's Cupcake sold Reinwald's will donate 30 percent to CancerCare.

Seems like a good reason to eat cupcakes and raise money for a good cause.

VIETNAM WAR MEMORIAL COMING TO HUNTINGTON

The Dignity Memorial Vietnam Wall, a three-quarter-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington D.C., has been touring the country since 1990, and will be coming to Peter Nelson Park (also known as Oakwood Park) for a weekend in October.

The 240-foot long, eight-foot high, faux-granite replica contains the names of more than 58,000 Americans who died or are missing in Vietnam.

"Honoring our veterans, thanking them for their sacrifices and for protecting and preserving our freedoms is something that each American should be extremely mindful of," said Councilman Mark Cuthbertson.

Supervisor Frank Petrone added, "For more than a quarter century, this memorial has been touching the hearts of Americans and reminding us never to forget those who paid the ultimate price on behalf of our country. Huntington, with its longstanding commitment to support veterans and their needs, is proud to be hosting the Dignity Memorial Vietnam Wall at one of our town parks."

The exhibit is scheduled to arrive at Peter Nelson Park on Sept. 28 with a motorcycle brigade escort. The wall will be open to the public from Oct. 1 through Oct. 3 – 24 hours a day.

The Town of Huntington is seeking volunteers to assist with tasks including setup, hospitality, security and dismantling. The town is also seeking sponsors who can help defray some of the costs of bringing the wall to Huntington. Interested persons should contact Stephen Jimenez at (631) 351-3171.
