Recreation Center Proposed

Plan would convert former day-laborer site to family sports center

The owner of the property that once hosted a day-laborer program is proposing to turn the site into an indoor-outdoor family recreation center.

Brad Rosen, who also owns property adjoining the closed laborer site and a building across the road near Third Street and Depot Road,  hopes to build a recreational facility in two parts.

One would consist of outdoor activities, such as batting cages or miniature golf. The other would be an indoor facility offering sports simulator games, such as golf or soccer, said Joan Cergol, executive director of the Economic Development Corp.

The EDC will hear more about his plan at a special meeting Tuesday at Town Hall.  Cergol said there are some possible hurdles, including code limitations in in the business district on recreational and game centers.

Cergol said Rosen's proposal could come before the Town Board on Feb.1, where the board would be asked to schedule the matter for votes at three later meetings.

The closed the laborers' site this summer by letting a contract expire after complaints about crime in the area.

Many Huntington Station residents have been requesting a push for the development of more businesses in the area.
