No. 70: Hot Spots for Bagels, Coffee Downtown

A number of bagel and coffee shops and delis in the village cater to hungry Huntingtonians on the go.

You can score a bagel and a cup of coffee in at least nine stores within two blocks in downtown Huntington, and in some stores you can watch them come straight from the kitchen.

Drive a little further up E. Main Street and you add in another bagel store where the chewy rounds come out still warm.

It’s a testament to how much Long Islanders love their bagels. Even in a snow storm, the flavorful bread remains a must-have for many.

Bagel Works, at 55 Wall St., next to the movie theater, has been the queen of village bagel stores, turning out everything from plain bagels to sesame to salt bagels, mini bagels and bialys along with whole wheat and sunflower bagels as well as low-carb variations. The store has been making bagels since 1995, says owner Luda Boguslavsky. It’s open seven days a week, from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day but Sunday, when it is open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. It will even ship bagels to transplanted Long Islanders who miss the taste of home.

There are regulars who stop every morning for coffee and a bagel on the way to work, along with the crowd on weekend mornings. While you’re on line, you’re bound to catch up with someone you know or haven’t seen in a while. You can grab your morning paper while you wait, too.

“The nice thing is, the line sometimes seems long when you come in the door, but it always moves fast,” said Joan Paolillo, who stopped with her daughter, Isabelle, on a recent morning. Isabelle said she comes a lot with her brother when they’re downtown in the village.

A half block away at Dunkin’ Donuts, 21 Wall St., it’s a mix between orders for coffee, donuts and bagels. Christina Sorrentino said she stops every morning for iced coffee on the way to the barn where she rides.

Friends Candi Bonafede, Jinny Porto and Claudia Mingin chatted and drank iced coffee as they caught their breath after walking to the store from Southdown School down West Neck Road. The three stop there each week as part of their weekend walking routine. The store opens at 5 a.m. daily, and closes at 11 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday and at 11:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Starbucks, at 1 Wall St., attracts coffee drinkers from the time it opens at 5:30 a.m. weekdays and 6 a.m. on weekends until 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, midnight on Fridays and Saturdays and 10 p.m. on Sundays.

Other downtown stops for early morning coffee drinkers open a bit later. They include Cupcake Gourmet, Crumbs Bake Shop, Double ‘S’ Deli, Main Street Delicatessen, Fiorello Dolce, Wild Flours Bake Shop, Village Creperie Cafe and A Rise Above Bakery.

Other stores offer early morning coffee and treats outside the village’s downtown, and everyone has their favorite. Grab a bagel and go!
