Night Closure of Westbound NSP Begins Sunday

The New York State Department of Transportation released the following Travel Advisory:

For the protection of motorists, all westbound travel lanes of the Northern State Parkway (NSP) will be closed each weekday night beginning Sunday, July 18, between Sagtikos Parkway (Exit 44) and NY Route 110 (Exit 40) in the Towns of Smithtown and Huntington. The westbound NSP closure will be in effect between the hours of 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. and will continue each Sunday through Thursday night, for approximately three weeks. 

These lane closures are needed to undertake a project to repave approximately five miles of the NSP. The top layer of sections of worn, distressed NSP pavement surface is being removed then replaced with new asphalt pavement and fresh pavement markings between Wolf Hill Road and Manetto Hill Road. When completed, this resurfacing work will help maintain the integrity of the roadway, and provide a smoother, safer riding surface for the approximately 80,000 motorists who use this area of the NSP each day. As with any roadway project, this operation is weather dependent and may be canceled, postponed, or prolonged due to inclement weather.

Once this phase of the westbound resurfacing is completed between Wolf Hill Road and New York Avenue, the westbound NSP night time closure will be extended to Manetto Hill Road (Exit 37) for an additional three weeks to resurface the NSP section between Sweet Hollow Road and Manetto Hill Road.

Motorists are being warned in advance of the closing via roadway message signs but are urged to use alternate routes to avoid delays. In addition, motorists are reminded to drive carefully through the work zone and detours, follow the instructions from the flag person, and obey the posted construction speed limit for their safety as well as the safety of the highway work crew.
