LIRR Service Slowed at Jamaica

Delays, cancellations plague lines because of storm.

The said Thursday that there were some delays on all lines about midday Thursday because of a possible gas leak near the Jamaica station.

Earlier in the day, and despite predictions that morning rush-hour service was expected to be back to normal, several trains were canceled or delayed.

Throughout the day Wednesday, the MTA's alert system sent out numerous warnings of canceled or delayed trains on the Port Jefferson line. Problems with a train stuck at Cold Spring Harbor and several delays between Hicksville and Huntington were reported.

Passengers trying to catch trains at the Huntington station expressed frustration over what they said was contradictory information about those alerts, the MTA's website and what they were told or read on signs at the station. The MTA website reported that most electric trains were operating but diesels were another matter.  An LIRR employee at the Huntington station in mid-afternoon could be heard telling a passenger exactly the opposite.

At one point Wednesday afternoon, of the three trains listed on the station's advisory ticker, one was identified as running an hour and eight minutes late, another was marked canceled and a third as delayed. Announcements shifted passengers from one platform to another.
