Legislators Organize Drive for Comforters

Sites around the area collect items to help those in need.

Suffolk County legislators are running a "comfort a family" drive around the area.

Residents are invited to donate new or gently used comforters that will be distributed by Family Service League, Island Harvest and other organizations to those who need warm bedding.

Those still suffering from the effects of Super Storm Sandy will also receive donations from Delta Airlines and the Disaster Recovery International Foundation.

Suffolk County Legis. William R. Spencer, Lou D’Amaro and Steve Stern, all of Huntington, and Rob Calarco and Deputy Presiding Officer Wayne Horsley are playing host to the drive in Huntington and Babylon.  Collection boxes will be placed in about 15 locations until Jan. 15.

“The idea to collect new and gently used comforters was conceived several months ago with the intention to help our Suffolk County residents and veterans in need,” Spencer said.  “We now know that the need is even greater as at least 2,000 homes on Long Island have been devastated by Super Storm Sandy. In the holiday spirit, any donations of new or gently-used, clean comforters and blankets will be happily received and distributed to those in need.”

Patrice Radowitz, public relations director for Family Residence & Essential Enterprises, said, “Even now, over a month later, there are still so many people who do not have heat or electricity. We have had warmer days here and there, but many cold winter nights are ahead of us. I am so thrilled about this comforter drive and knowing that efforts are being made to assist those who have been hit the hardest.”

Legislator Spencer’s district office at 15 Park Circle, Suite 209, Centerport will have a box for collection of donated comforters and blankets.

Does the Patch accept articles from district spokespeople? Perhaps that is the answer to thisRead More problem! Short but informative articles can be submitted each week and then Huntington could get the coverage it so desires. Each town's Patch would cover whichever high schools are in it's area. Problem solved!

Maybe St Anthony's gets more coverage b/c they "advertise" with the Patch?? Sad, but youRead More know how it goes, whoever fills the pocket, gets the attention!!

They do have the metal inside and they are all the same size. If you are seriously interested I willRead More gladly send you some more pictures. As far as the price, the best I can do is a bundle. Maybe 4 for $100 or 2 for $60. They were looked at by a store owner who wanted to purchase and sell in her store for $50 each. They are very cute, very trendy :)

Do they have the metal inside that held the glass bottles? Are they different sizes? It's hard toRead More tell from the pic. I would definitely buy 2 or 3 but, I wouldn't be able to pay 40.00 each. 20-25 each I can do. Thanks, Karen

I have no idea why the Patch isn't covering any of this. Go Huntington!

I would love to become part of the Huntington Chamber of Commerce. However, for a new business itRead More is costly and may not fit into every new business owners budget. May I suggest a provisional 1-year membership at a reduced cost. Once successful the provisional members can give back by supporting other new members.
