Irene Tracking Close To Gloria's Path

Powerful storm forecast to take similar path to that of Hurricane Gloria which made landfall on Long Island in 1985.

It's been 26 years since Hurricane Gloria reached Long Island, now Hurricane Irene has the potential to take a similar path of destruction.

With the exact path still uncertain, the National Weather Service is warning of potential storm conditions for Long Island this weekend.

"Hurricane Irene may directly impact the local waters with strong winds and dangerous seas," according to a NWS bulletin issued Wednesday.

In 1985, Hurricane Gloria followed the Mid-Atlantic coastline in mid-September first making landfall in North Carolina. The Category 4 storm which killed 8 and caused an estimated $900 million in damage, later made landfall in Long Island as a Category 3 before reaching Connecticut.

According to the National Weather Service, Hurricane Irene, a large, powerful Category 3 storm located near the Bahamas, is forecast to track up the East Coast in the coming days.
