Huntington School Race Deadline Extended

State law requires extension because sixth candidate withdrew.

The Huntington school district announced Thursday morning that the petition deadline for candidates seeking a seat on the school board has been extended to May 4.

The original deadline for the May 17 election was Monday and five candidates are already in the running.  Because a sixth candidate submitted a petition by the Monday deadline but then withdrew after the deadline, under state law, the district must allow more time so that other candidates can join the race.

Nominating petitions must be signed by 83 Huntington School District resident voters. Petitions must be submitted to the office of District Clerk Elizabeth Troffa,  at 50 Tower Street in Huntington Station. For more information, contact Mrs. Troffa at 673-2126.

A drawing of lots to determine the order in which the candidates’ names will appear on the ballot will be conducted  May 5 at 8 a.m. in the district’s administrative offices.

Two seats are open on the board, those held by Christine Bene, who chose not to run again, and Bill Dwyer, the board president who is seeking re-election. The three-year terms  start July1 and run through June 30, 2014.
