Suffolk County Health Services (SCDHS) Commissioner James Tomarken
announced on Aug. 24 that 29 additional mosquito samples have tested positive for West Nile virus.
The mosquito samples, collected between Aug. 20-23, were from locations in Nesconset (2), Farmingville, West Babylon (2), Huntington Station, Northport, Greenlawn, Dix Hills, Bay Shore, Lindenhurst, Jamesport, Aquebogue, Port Jefferson Station, Ridge, East Setauket and Yaphank.
To date this year, 192 mosquito samples and twenty-nine birds have tested positive for the virus.
As previously reported, two human cases of WNV have been reported in Suffolk County this year. Both persons, , had been hospitalized and have recovered and been released from the hospital.
Tomarken said the number of mosquitoes testing positive for West Nile has been historically high.
'Jaws' Returns to Crab Meadow Beach
'Jaws' is coming back to Northport's Crab Meadow Beach on Monday for a rain date show as part of the Town's 'Movies on the Lawn' series. The movie will start at 8:30 p.m. Gates will open by 6 p.m. and it is suggested that you pack lawn chairs, in the event the drive-in lot fills early. Overflow parking will be available and bus service brings people and their belongings to the beach.
