10 places to volunteer this holiday season

It's the season of giving and if you'd rather give of yourself instead of buying presents, Huntington offers plenty of opportunities. Here are just a few.

  1. Helping Hands Rescue Mission. 631-351-6996  The mission is still in need of volunteers for their various programs during the holiday season especially during the week. Use their online form to sign up. They are located at 225 Broadway, Huntington Station, NY. 
  2. Huntington Senior Center -- Program supervisor Julia Frangione says there are many areas where volunteers are needed, including the gift and thrift shops, helpers to serve coffee and assist seniors with carrying trays at lunchtime, and bingo game helpers. The center is located at 423 Park Ave., Huntington. Call 631-351-3253 to volunteer.
  3. -- 631-421-4242 Volunteers are needed to help with the annual Breakfast with Santa. They also need help putting the food baskets together for distribution. Call or visit them to fill out a volunteer application. It is located at 60 Main St., Huntington, NY 11743
  4. -- 631-427-3700 ext 501.  Get in the holiday spirit as a volunteer for "Project TOY." If you are 18 years or older they need your help as a gift wrapper. The program is running Dec 17, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Dec 20 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Dec 21 from 9-3 p.m. Volunteers will be asked to commit to a 2-hour shift. The wrapping will be done at the TRI CYA office at 809 New York Avenue, Huntington Station. (behind the Big-H shopping center).
  5. Splashes of Hope - 631-424-8230  or e-mail.  If you want to work with your hands, consider volunteering for some priming and varnishing or graphic art work for Splashes of Hope, a non-profit organization. Their administrative office and art studio are located at the Suffolk County Park "Coindre Hall", on the grounds of West Neck Farm in Huntington, New York. 
  6. Huntington Hospital – Be a greeter or distribute books and magazines. Help is always welcome and there are many opportunities available to help those who may not be able to be home for the holidays. It is located at 270 Park Avenue, Huntington. Call the Volunteer Office at 631- 351-2081. Juniors aged 14-18 may pick up applications in the Volunteer Office.
  7. Island Harvest - 2010 Holiday Volunteer Opportunities will be available weekdays and weekends at over 100 locations on Long Island. They need help picking up donations from local supermarkets. More information.
  8. , 90 High Street, Huntington,   631-924-6700. Get involved for more than just the holidays. Volunteers are needed to provide relief to victims of disaster and help people prepare for and respond to emergencies.
  9. Town of Huntington Adult Daycare Program. Compassionate volunteers are needed to help the frail and elderly in this program that provides a variety of activities and hot meals. To volunteer call program supervisor Amy Geist at 631-351-3293 or email her.
