Rep. Gary Ackerman, D-Roslyn Heights, announced Thursday evening that he will not seek reelection to the U.S. Congress. Ackerman, 69, served in Congress for 15 terms. In a statement, Ackerman said that he believed that the proposed congressional redistricting would have been favorable. Still, he announced he would not run in November.

An East Northport man killed his ex-girlfriend and mother of his child on Monday, before taking his own life in an apparent murder-suicide, police said. Authorities said James Schultz, 31, picked up his 13-month-old child from the house of Katherine Farrell, 23, of 3 Hill Road in St. James early Monday morning. That's when police said Schultz stabbed the baby's mother to death.
