Fire Department Asks That Hydrants Be Cleared

Fire fighters concerned about snow accumulation.

The urges residents to remember clearing snow from around fire hydrants following the most recent winter storm.

With nearly record levels of snow accumulation over the past 30 days, fire hydrants across the area are at risk of being blocked in by snow.

Blocked hydrants means slower response to extinguishing structure fires which can result in catastrophic consequences.

To assure access, residents are encouraged to clear a path to fire hydrants and remove snow from all sides.

The Long Island Water Conference issued the same plea.

“We are asking residents and business owners to please remember to keep fire hydrants clear of snow this winter,” LIWC Chairman Karl
Schweitzer said. “By taking a few minutes to dig out any hydrants in your area, you are helping our firefighters perform lifesaving work without delays to ensure your safety and that of others.”
