VIDEO: Few Take Last Train Out

Traffic on the Long Island Railroad was light at Huntington Station in advance of Hurricane Irene Saturday.

Friday afternoon, LIRR officials warned passengers that the railroad would be shutting down just after noon Sunday. Apparently, most people heeded their call.

"Everybody got the word," said a worker at the Huntington Station terminal. 'I think the railroad put the message out clearly."

The last eastbound arrived at about 1:40 p.m. Saturday. The final westbound train left at about 1 p.m

The shutdown included the LIRR, along with subways, buses, Metro-North Railroad and Access-A-Ride.

With the hurricane moving slowly along the eastern seaboard, it is expected to reach Long Island Sunday. It remains unclear when LIRR service will resume to full capacity.
