Driver Accused of DWI After Striking Pedestrian

Man crossing New York Avenue in Huntington Station is seriously injured.

A Huntington Station man was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and fleeing the scene after he struck a pedestrian early Saturday morning, Suffolk County police said.

Alexander Thomas, 48, of Brooklyn, was seriously injured when he was struck while crossing New York Avenue near East Second Street. The accident occurred at 3:56 a.m.

Police officers Joseph Carboni and Thomas Collins arrested Christian Pivaral, 21, shortly after the accident nearby on New York Avenue. He was driving a 1997 Nissan Sentra south on New York Avenue when the accident occurred. He was charged with leaving the scene of an incident without reporting involving serious physical injury and driving while intoxicated. He is being held overnight and is scheduled for arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip on Sunday.

Thomas was taken by the Huntington Community First Aid Squad to Huntington Hospital for serious injuries.

The investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact theVehicular Crime Unit at 631-852-6555 or call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
