The Suffolk County Department of Health issued bathing advisories for Huntington area beaches Tuesday in anticipation of continued heavy rainfall.
Runoff from heavy rainfall can carry bacteria in excess of state safety levels into the waterways. The beaches covered by the advisory are located in areas that are heavily influenced by stormwater runoff from the surrounding watersheds and/or adjacent tributaries, and, because of their location in an enclosed embayment, experience limited tidal flushing.
The county recommends that bathing and other water contact be suspended in affected areas until the waters have been flushed by two successive tidal cycles (at least a 24 hr. period) after the cessation of rainfall.
The affected beaches are as follows:Beach Location Eagle Dock Community Beach Cold Spring Harbor Cold Spring Harbor Beach Club
Beach Lloyd Harbor West Neck Beach Lloyd Harbor Lloyd Neck Bath Club Beach Lloyd Harbor Lloyd Harbor Village Park Beach Lloyd Harbor Gold Star Battalion Park Beach Huntington
Head of the Bay Club Beach Huntington Bay Nathan Hale Beach Club Beach Huntington Bay Baycrest Association Beach

The advisory will be lifted at 10 p.m. Thursday unless County sampling shows elevated bacterial numbers persisting beyond the 24-hr period.
Many of the beaches included in this advisory have already closed for the season and no longer supply lifeguard supervision.
