New York Faces High Hurdles As The Legislature Begins A New Year

Today’s State of the State address demonstrated the vast array of issues facing New York’s families, businesses and entrepreneurs. With our families and friends continuing to face some of the highest tax burdens in the nation, I was particularly happy to hear Gov. Cuomo offering ideas to provide property tax relief for our homeowners. His proposal to improve New York’s business climate, including simplification of the tax code is also a positive step for the state.

However, we must continue to take actions to ensure that our children are provided with every opportunity to excel. Steps must be taken to guarantee that our young people receive the quality mental health care they need, which is why I will continue to lead the fight to keep Sagamore Children’s Psychiatric Center operating in its current capacity. We must also take steps to address and refocus the Common Core curriculum so that our children continue to receive an education which sets them on a course to be leaders in our nation and the world. I look forward to working with my colleagues in the Assembly and Senate, along with the governor to deliver a better state for all New Yorkers.
