Warning Issued on Gift Card Scam

Identity theft is aim of text messaging scheme, Stern says.

Suffolk Legis. Steve Stern, D-Huntington, is warning residents about another scam.

"Smishing" scammers send potential victims text messages congratulating them for winning gift cards and directing them to sites masquerading as major retail sites. They include such stores as Best Buy, Target and Walmart. There, victims are told to enter personal information such as name, cellphone number, mailing address and other personal information.

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) recently issued a warning on such scams, advising consumers that this information is used in identity theft operations and to target advertising.  BBB recommends that recipients of such texts ignore such messages and to avoid even any link to remove a phone number from the distribution list.

Any response validates the contact information for the scammer.

You can forward any “smishing” texts to 7726 (SPAM) to alert your mobile carrier to block future texts from these numbers.  “We have all received texts congratulating us for “winning” a gift card,” Stern said.  “Legitimate retailers do not send out texts soliciting personal information.  Scammers use very sophisticated looking websites to fool people into providing this information.”

I forgot to add that the Huntington Blue Devils are playing at Stony Brook University vs. MillerRead More Place on Wednesday, May 29 at 5 pm. Maybe I will contact the Stony Brook Patch and ask if they will go to the game.

They do have the metal inside and they are all the same size. If you are seriously interested I willRead More gladly send you some more pictures. As far as the price, the best I can do is a bundle. Maybe 4 for $100 or 2 for $60. They were looked at by a store owner who wanted to purchase and sell in her store for $50 each. They are very cute, very trendy :)

Do they have the metal inside that held the glass bottles? Are they different sizes? It's hard toRead More tell from the pic. I would definitely buy 2 or 3 but, I wouldn't be able to pay 40.00 each. 20-25 each I can do. Thanks, Karen

I have no idea why the Patch isn't covering any of this. Go Huntington!

I would love to become part of the Huntington Chamber of Commerce. However, for a new business itRead More is costly and may not fit into every new business owners budget. May I suggest a provisional 1-year membership at a reduced cost. Once successful the provisional members can give back by supporting other new members.
