Mixed Reaction at Islanders' Practice Rink

Hockey fans at the New York Islanders' practice facility in Syosset express disappointment Wednesday at news of the team's planned departure from Nassau.

The announcement that the New York Islanders will be leaving Nassau County was met with mild chagrin Wednesday at the franchise's practice facility, Iceworks in Syosset.

"I feel that the [county] messed up," said Amy Gorelkin, of Syosset, as she dropped off her son, Ethan. She said the failure of the negotiations for a new arena left the team with little recourse, and the county deserved the loss. "It's not an ideal situation, but I think they took advantage of it."

Ethan, 13, took a stronger position.

"I think that it's better 'cause the Coliseum's a dump. Have you seen the Barclays Center? It's sick!" he said.

Katsumi Moi, of Roslyn, was also dropping her son off at the rink. She said she wonders what the effect will be on the team playing so far from its fans.

"I'm disappointed. Nassau County should give them the opportunity to stay here," Moi said, though she acknowledged she understands the decision.

Employees at the Pro Shop inside the building said they haven't heard what the team's future at the rink will be, but that they don't anticipate it will affect business too much.

A call to the Islanders was not immediately returned.

STOP THE CRYING ALREADY! Nobody ever went to the games anyhow...and be glad they didn't move to kansas City or Hamilton, Ontario Canada....now that's a trip!

Maybe not you Danny but we are losing a great, inexpensive night out with the family. Loads of fun to watch win or lose. Amazing memories I have going with my father and also my children. Great for the team, not so great for me.

According to Holy Cross sports economics professor Victor A. Matheson, new stadiums do not equate to economic performance: http://college.holycross.edu/RePEc/hcx/Matheson-Baade_FinancingSports.pdf

There were so many proposals on the table and they were voted down each time. So it appears Nassau County will be stuck with an abandoned, broken down, asbestos filled arena. It can't even be imploded because of the asbestos! So how much higher are Nassau County taxes going to be now once it is abandoned & useless? I don't blame Mr. Wang for moving them to the new arena in Brooklyn....but can you really see Long Island fans going to Brooklyn to see a game? I will have great memories of the Nassau Coliseum, the concerts, circus, live performances, and the hockey games from long ago...but now it will become nothing but a tax burden.
