Company Funds Maritime Training

System to train maritime students in barge and tug operations.

A Melville company is donating $750,000 to the SUNY Maritime College for a simulation training center.

The Bouchard Transportation Co .Tug & Barge Center will offer full mission bridge simulators, instruction stations and a debriefing area where instructors and students can discuss navigation, seamanship and bridge resource management skills needed in the operation of tugs and barges.

A request for proposal is posted on the New York State Contract System website for firms to work with Bouchard Transportation on modeling the simulator off the bridges of the company’s tugboats.

The physical model of the bridge will be made to fit one model; however, the electronic components will be based upon four different models of Bouchard tugboats. Additionally, the simulation will include eight areas of operation including approaches to New York harbor, Port Jefferson, the Long Island Sound, Norfolk, the Chesapeake, Port Everglades and others.

“Bouchard is committed to educating our future mariners, the young people who will lead this industry in the years to come, and to training mariners currently working in the tug and barge industry to keep them aware of new topics and procedures,” said Morton Bouchard III, president/CEO of Bouchard Transportation Company, Inc.
