Massapequa Scoop: DQ Coming

Restaurant chain famous for its ice cream treats plans to open first Long Island location on Sunrise Highway.

RiDQulous news, ice cream fans.

Dairy Queen has announced plans to open a restaurant in Massapequa.

The Minnesota-based company’s website has a DQ Grill and Chill restaurant coming soon at 5366 Sunrise Highway in Massapequa, near the Westfield Mall.

DQ spokesman Dean A. Peters said the location is expected to open in early May.

No word on who the franchisee is.

Dairy Queen has more than 4,500 locations nationwide, but this would be the first on Long Island.

While DQ is famous for its ice cream, shakes and Blizzard frozen treats, the chain also serves burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches and chicken. That puts it in direct competition with some entrenched Massapequa businesses, from Friendly's to All-American Hamburger.

Peters said DQ also plans to open locations in Manhattan and Staten Island in 2013.

I remember going there many times. I work around the corner from there and I think they closed in 1987. I started working at my job in 86 and went there all the time, I am waiting 26 years for a new Dairy Queen even though its 50 miles from my home. Warren

There used to be a Dairy Queen in Plainview, on Old Country Road, a couple of blocks East of S. Oyster Bay Rd. --- But they left about 50-55 years ago! I think they left around or just before 1960. (Boy, I'm dating myself!!) Now there are homes there. It will be great to have DQ on LI.
