Heads Up on Traffic During Microsoft Show

Concert, store grand opening at mall expected to clog travel.

Suffolk County police are warning of traffic problems Friday with the opening of a Microsoft store and the accompanying John Legend concert at Walt Whitman Shops.

"Traffic delays are expected throughout the day regarding this event," the Second Precinct said Tuesday.

People hoping to get into the Friday evening concert by Legend and Taio Cruz can start lining up at 10 p.m. Thursday. Camping is permitted in the parking lot between Saks and Macy's.

At 10:30 a.m. Friday, a ceremony that includes a ribbon cutting and the awarding of $1 million in software to Junior Achievement of New York will precede the opening of the store at 11 a.m.

Once the doors open, Microsoft will begin handing out wristbands for the concert. The first 200 people in line for the store opening will receive two complimentary premier viewing wristbands for Friday night performance. One wristband grants the recipient admission to both the performance and a meet-and-greet with Legend after the show. The second wristband grants another person admission to the concert only.

The next 1,250 people in line, and possibly more, will receive two premier viewing wristbands to the performance in the northeast corner of the shops parking lot, on New York Avenue.

The concert is set for 6 p.m., with gates opening at 4.

On Saturday at 2 p.m., Jets Hall of Famer Curtis Martin will play Kinect in the Microsoft store with selected customers.

Microsoft said its retail stores offer the following:

  • A curated assortmentof technology products, including Windows PCs, Windows Phones, Kinect for Xbox 360, Office 2010 and more.
  • A range of tech trainings, business-ready PCs, phones and more. Great resource for small businesses.
  • Community organizations are regularly hosted in the theater space and the employees are out in the community supporting local causes.
  • Through a partnership with Skinit, customers can show off their personal style and design their own lids and skins for laptops, phones and Xbox.

The Microsoft grand opening will occur even as the parking lots and the Route 110 side of the mall are undergoing considerable work as the Simon property goes upscale.

Huntington Station isn't the only community getting a new Microsoft store. The company is also opening a site in White Plains, with baseball manager Joe Torre and Lenny Kravitz.
