Gas Stations: Is There a Shortage?

Recent closings have left some areas without service nearby.

Several gas stations have closed in the last two years around Huntington, among them the Mobil station at the corner of Park Avenue and Jericho Turnpike. That leaves the entire stretch of Park Avenue from Jericho to Main Street without fueling service. The Shell station on Jericho at Elwood Road also closed recently.

The closings aren't limited to Huntington.

The New York Times reported last summer that more than 50,000 stations across the country had closed since 1991, citing environmental problems and competition from big-box retailers.

Do we need more stations in Huntington? Or should we just get used to driving farther to buy gas?
