Dairy Queen to Open Huntington Location Next Year

A good kind of "Blizzard" is coming to town.

Dairy Queen's Long Island rebirth is coming to Suffolk County next year–or more specifically, to Huntington.

According to the New York Real Estate Journal, Dairy Queen Grill and Chill has leased the currently vacant property at 321 West Jericho Turnpike, right around the block from Walt Whitman High School.

The lease was negotiated by Breslin Realty Development Corp., which also negotiated a deal last year in Massapequa for the first new Dairy Queen location on Long Island since the 1970s.

"We are so excited to come to Huntington!," Long Island DQ wrote on its Facebook page recently. "We are hoping for a spring 2015 opening."

The Massapequa Dairy Queen restaurant opened last July. A Levittown location is also coming soon.

Are you a Dairy Queen fan? Do you think it's a good fit for Huntington? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

Sources close to Blizzard HQ have leaked that this decision was an homage to James C. Metzger - recent inductee into the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame. It seems that Metzger's appreciation for Dairy Queen frozen products is famous throughout the Tampa Bay area. Metzger was unavailable for comment at the time of this post.

Awesome. Look at all the vacant property on Jericho. From Round Swamp rd to 110 there are a number of vacant lots!

Its almost a shame they didnt go a little further east on Jericho to the place were there once was a DQ - in the closed up Blockbuster. Then we would really have come full circle!

It is nice to see any new store open. Even if it would have been nice to have something a little more independent and local. Good Luck DQ

The space where BlockBuster was indeed had a freestanding Ice Cream store, but it was Dairy King, not Queen!!! A local Huntington Station family owned it..

Will it be in the vacant car lot opposite Scruffys Auto Repair?

@Bumpkin, I give up. I'm not sure I can convince you that anything is news :-)

Based on the address given it is the old OTB.

We welcome them to Huntington, love DQ and it will be a beautiful fit in that area.
Shelley February 11, 2014 at 10:51 AM

I am glad DQ is coming to Huntington, however, there are many other suitable areas. There's already a huge problem with people crossing Jericho, and so many fast good in one spot. Blockbuster would have been great, or where sitar was, even many places down 110. As it is people pulling out of dd, and bk pull right in front of you. Be safe.

The old Sitar site would be lousy -- too far away from anything. I agree the Blockbuster site would have been better, but still, happy to see DQ coming to Huntington.

O good..this means a surge in high school kids trying to get across jericho! Good times! (See the sarcasm i did there?) -.-
