College Grads Working Hard to Find Jobs

Diplomas proving less than enough for work in Huntington.

College grads in Huntington searching for jobs agree that competition is stiff for available jobs.

According to a recent New York Times survey, among the members of the class of 2010, just 56 percent had held at least one job by this spring. "That compares with 90 percent of graduates from the classes of 2006 and 2007," said the report.

The sentiment in Huntington was much the same. Among all college graduates interviewed one common theme was evident — the job market is fiercely competive.

A 28-year-old Huntington Station resident with a degree from Adelphi University in criminal justice didn't want to give her name, but she said she has been searching since 2008 and pretty much given up trying to find job in her field.

Others agreed that they are having to go to the extra mile to compete.
